Why do people fear public speaking?

Have you ever wondered why most of us have this fear? If no, then the answer is that most of us suffer from social anxiety!!

If I am having social anxiety, then I am greatly concern about how other people are judging me. I would fear to freeze on the spot, bubbling up the words, or just messing up in the public. It is just these thoughts that make a person wish for death rather than facing reality.

Analysing your fear of public speaking

So here comes the most awaited section. In this section we are going to learn public speaking skills from scratch.

Content making for presentation

Always remember CONTENT IS THE KING!!

If you have to deliver a presentation or have to speak up on a certain topic then you must know your content exactly.

Take a paper and write down your niche and then write the headings that revolve around that niche, then write down the subheadings under respective headings, and now one by one start filling information in these subheadings. Trust me it is the best and the fastest way to write content.

(It is a sample format in which you can write)

Learning the content

learning the content for presentation

Once you have created the content the next challenge is to feed it into your brain. Don’t worry we are not going to follow the old traditional ways of mugging up the content.

I am going to share with you the techniques which most of the good public speakers use.

Follow these steps one by one

Step- 1 Read the whole content 2-3 times meticulously (just read, don’t force yourself to learn it)
Step-2Now read headings and subheadings only and then try to speak the content of these subheadings by yourself.
Step-3Again read the whole content 2-3 times
Step-4Follow step-2 again!!
Step-5Now leave the paper and just recall the heading, its respective sub heading and then speak the content by yourself. (many  of you won’t remember the exact content but most of you will remember the headings, it’s sub heading and the main points of sub heading)

Practicing the content

practicing content for presentation

Once we have created the content and noted in our mind, now it’s the time to practice it in the most efficient way so that we can present it effectively in front of the gathering.

Follow these instructions to master this section!!

  • Speak the content 2-3 times in your mind and crosscheck it with your notes.
  • Speak the content verbally 2-3 times in front of the mirror and look directly straight into your eyes

(for now don’t be over conscious of your body language)

The above steps will assure you that you are well-rehearsed with the content

Way to speak

way to speak in front of audience

The way you speak up the message is as important as the content. For example let us consider three speakers who are conveying the same message but in different ways.

Speaker 1: (speaks in a one go) don’t stop when you are tired stop when you are done

Speaker 2: don’t stop (1-sec pause) when you are tired (1-sec pause) stop (1-sec pause) when you are done.

Speaker 3:   //high volume and in anger// don’t stop!! (1 sec pause)  //in concern way and normal tone// when you are tired (1 sec pause) //in a convincing manner and high volume// stop ( 1 sec pause)  // in a soothing way and relaxing voice // when you are done!!

So you can notice that despite of the fact that three of them have spoken the same lines, speaker 3 would be preferred over speaker 2, who would be again preferred over speaker over speaker 1.

Conclusion from the example

The above-stated example shows us the importance of pauses and change of tone.

Speaker 1 owing to his fear just wanted to end up his lines as quickly as possible. So he skipped the heart and soul of public speaking and became a matter of laugh for each person in the audience.

Speaker 2 took right pauses at the right places for the appropriate amount of time for which he was appreciated by some, but at the same time he was criticized by some for not varying his tone.

Speaker 3 was applauded by each and every person present there for his correct timing of pauses and the right variability of emotions in tone.

So the conclusion for you, be like speaker 3!! Just forget about fear and deliver your speech using appropriate pauses and varying tone

Varying the tone

vary tone for public speaking

Mastering this section requires practice but believe me it is very easy. So what you have to do is, just understand the emotion of each word of the line and then speak according to those emotions. We will understand this with the help of an example.

DREAM BIG BUT DARE TO FAIL
Dream bigWhen you say “DREAM BIG” you want the listeners to get inspire and start dreaming big for themselves, there should be a certain amount of passion and confidence in your tone that could influence them to do so. You can high up your volume and have a little smile on your face.
But“BUT” in this line stands for a warning so you have to speak this word like you are warning the audience. You should lower your volume and hide your little smile
Dare to failby saying these words you want the audience to consider the fact that they might fail many times while trying to achieve their goals so they should not fear to fail. In this line you want to convey a message so your voice should be soothing and at the same time your volume should be in between of “ dream big” and “but”, you can again bring back your little smile on your face.

You might think that it is a very tiring work, but believe me, it would take some time in the beginning but after that, all this would become a child play for you!!

How to use body language

body language in public speaking

“I speak two languages: body and English” ~(quote of May West).

Body language is the art of movement, gestures, and postures which synchronizes with the verbal communication of the speaker.

It includes your facial expressions, hand gestures, body movement, and eye contact. Your face should be depictive, your hands should not rest at one place for a long time you should move them in small intervals accordingly, you can walk on the stage slowly while speaking and eyes should be rolling after certain pauses to each and every corner of the room.

You can record yourself and then can work on each of the above-stated parameters.

We have covered all the aspects of public speaking, so it’s a practice time I am leaving you with an assignment that would help you to excel in this field.

I am giving you certain quotes; you have to apply all the things and the ways you have learned so far. You can record yourself and analyze the recording for the best results.

  1. Doubt kills more dream than failure ever will
  2. Stop dreaming start doing
  3. Tough time don’t last tough people do
  4. You only fail when you stop trying
  5. If you want to go big stop thinking small
