Beauty and the Beast : The Story

As each fairy tale goes, Beauty and the Beast also begins with once upon a time in a faraway French land, it was a kingdom of a very wealthy royal family. The Prince of that kingdom was selfish and had a heart with no love in it.

He liked to throw big parties with his Royal subjects. During one such party, an old beggar woman turned in at the Royal gates, only to be ridiculed and dismissed by the Prince.

Soon the beggar woman shed her haggard appearance to reveal her true identity as an Enchantress. Seeing no love in his heart and a pride failing to look past one’s superficial appearance, she cursed the Prince to become a hideous beast and his subjects were turned into household objects.

The outside world was also made to forget their existence. The Enchantress parts with the Beast giving him a mirror showing the outside world and a rose.

If he made another being fall in love with him before the fall of the last petal of that rose, he would be free of the spell. Otherwise, he will be doomed to remain a beast forever.

Several years later in the village of Villeneuve, came a young woman named Belle. She doesn’t quite fit in with the rest of the townspeople, who all view her as odd. Maurice, music box maker, is the father of this odd lady.

Movie Insights

One day Maurice is set to head to another town to sell his music boxes, and Belle asks him to bring back a rose, like he always does.

Maurice rides through the forest with his horse Philippe. He turns toward a path where snow is falling.

A pack of wolves encounters Maurice, forcing him and Philippe to flee. They pass through a gate that leads him onto the forgotten grounds of the Prince’s castle and here, he’s imprisoned by the Beast.

When she comes in search of her imprisoned father, Maurice (Kevin Kline), the Beast takes her in his place.

The enchanted mansion’s lord desperately seeks love’s warm embrace. Over time, Belle sees beyond the furry coat and she befriends him. The two spend long days together in the snow and the sun and gradually they fall in love.

Belle must love the Beast before the last petal falls, but when it falls, she must find a way to get to the Beast before it’s too late.

Beauty and the Beast: My Review

An adaptation to the original animated version in the year 1991, the classic tale of The ‘Beauty and the Beast’ has turned out to be a job with finesse. Right from the scenes and venues to the plot to the costumes, all has been preserved in its original form and been delivered in a beautiful re-make.

Dan Stevens , the Prince in the movie, is made to learn to love and recognise one beyond their superficial appearance. He is turned into a hideous Beast along with his family members turned into household items like clock, teapot, etc.

Between hi getting the curse and meeting Belle (Emma Watson), in no scene, he is shown pity just because he is cursed but waves of Sympathy are what we all feel for him.

Soon, both sharing the common love for books, bring the Beast and Belle closer. Belle starts seeing him for what he really is, beneath that fur coating. The  Beast had forgotten many things about his past, a lot of which Belle teaches him. They slowly develop a connection which eventually makes them love each other.

Gaston (Luke Evans) is yet another character who is very entertaining. He is the hunk of the town who is head over heels in awe for Belle. But Belle has nothing to do with him.

Belle’s father character played by Kevil Klien, shows how great an actor he is.

The movie overall follows every formula in all aspects. Thus, delivering a great re-make with some of the most appreciable performances by actors.

Trivia:

Interesting Facts about the fairytale ‘Beauty and the Beast (2017)

Fact 1

Ryan Gosling was offered the role of the Beast, but turned it down to appear in La La Land (2016) instead. Emma Watson was offered the lead role in that movie, but turned down that movie to star in this one.

Fact 2

When Director Bill Condon first spoke to Disney about adapting Beauty and the Beast (1991), they actually weren’t sure they were going to do this new version as a musical. Condon said “With all due respect, I think you’re crazy. The songs are too good. You’re going to spend all this time making a huge, gorgeous live-action and not do ‘Be Our Guest’?”

Fact 3

Ewan McGregor performed Lumière’s “Be Our Guest” dances in motion-capture. However, he was embarrassed at wearing the motion-capture suit, and couldn’t dance properly unless he was completely alone with the filming crew.

Fact 4

According to Ewan McGregor, the hardest part about playing Lumière was getting the character’s French accent right, although his wife Eve Mavrakis is French. He said his voice ended up sounding Mexican instead of French, so he had to redo his dialogue after filming had completed.

Fact 5

Sir Ian McKellen originally turned down the voice of Cogsworth in Beauty and the Beast (1991).

Fact 6

According to Emma Watson, when Belle had to be intentionally struck in the face by a snowball, the whole sequence required numerous attempts, until a satisfactory hit was accomplished. In the end, Emma had to keep moving her face (target) into the line of fire, in order to increase the chances of a direct hit.

Fact 7

The song “Gaston” has new lyrics that were written by the late Howard Ashman, but never made the final cut of the 1991 movie. As a result, the song is slightly longer, and is more mature-themed, but minus the reprise.

Fact 8

Emma Watson revealed to fans that she would be playing the role of Belle before it even went on record. A big fan of Beauty and the Beast (1991) since childhood, she told her fans that her “six-year-old self is on the ceiling, heart bursting.”

Fact 9

Alan Menken, who scored Beauty and the Beast (1991), returned to score this live-action adaptation, which includes new recordings of the original songs, in addition to new songs written by Menken and Tim Rice.

Fact 10

In Beauty and the Beast (1991), the Beast’s castle is shown to be quite close to the village, yet nobody in the village knew about it, nor noticed the absence of those who live there, when they are cursed. The prologue of this version elaborates on this part of the story, explaining part of the curse involved the world forgetting about the castle and its inhabitants.

Fact 11

Belle’s ballroom gown required three thousand feet of thread, and over twelve thousand designer hours to complete. It was accentuated with two thousand one hundred sixty Swarovski crystals.

Fact 12

During the ballroom scene, Emma Watson had a hard time not looking at her feet, because Dan Stevens was wearing steel-toed shoes, and she was afraid he would step on her.

Fact 13

Director Bill Condon had actors and actresses sing The Lion King (1994)’s “Hakuna Matata” at the auditions to measure their singing voices. This was how he chose the final cast for this movie.

Fact 14

Emma Watson said she was bored during the filming of “Be Our Guest”, since all she did was sit on a chair. The crew would tell her jokes, to keep her entertained, as well as trigger genuine giggling, to be used in the scene.

Fact 15

Shortly after it was announced that Emma Watson would be playing Belle, Belle’s voice actresses Paige O’Hara (the original voice of Belle (1991)) and Susan Egan (who originated the role on Broadway) expressed their endorsement and approval of Watson as a live-action Belle.

Fact 16

Luke Evans (Gaston) had to wear fake teeth during filming, due to having canines that are longer than normal, which he said would have made Gaston look like a vampire.
