How to solve a Rubik’s cube in 10 seconds? The World Record Guide

0

Solving a Rubik’s cube isn’t impossible you must have known by now.

If you have learned the Rubik’s solving method and watched some of the world record videos on YouTube, then you must have been thinking of solving it within at least 10 seconds.

Well 10 seconds is still a big deal.

Here we will be discussing some of the techniques to solve the Rubik’s cube within 10 seconds. If you don’t know how to solve a Rubik’s cube, then go to “How to solve a Rubik’s Cube in 1 minute? Beginner’s Guide.”

What is Speedcubing?

Speedcubing is solving the cube incredibly fast. The speedcubers solve the cube with incredible lightning speed. Your one blink of an eye and there is already the white cross completed.

There are lot of institutions who teaches the students the different algorithms to skip some part like PLL, give them some tips to solve it quicker than an average human.

Speedcubing is an art of moving the fingers as fast as you can along with looking ahead for further cases and perform the respective algorithms.

Speedcubers practice some finger tricks for the algorithms to make the algorithm quicker.

  • The Fastest one-solve of Rubik’s cube is recorded to be 3.47 seconds, held by Yusheng Du.
  • The fastest Solve of the Rubik’s cube by a Robot is 0.38 seconds. That’s too fast to be attained by a human being.

Requirements

Most obviously, you require a Rubik’s cube which is fast enough. You won’t wish that the pieces of the cube pop out while solving the cube, or one side gets stuck in the middle of an algorithm which sometimes interrupts in a way that you forget the whole algorithm.

Magnetic Speed Cube

Of course, for speed cubing you need a Speed cube.

A speed cube has curved corners of all its pieces, which enhances the movement of any side. The cube has magnets inside every piece which incredibly increases the speed.

The whole side of the cube gets along the track only halfway through the move, which makes it quick to perform two moves in synchronization. The tension in the screws depends from person to person, some might prefer loose, while some prefer tight.

There are a lot of good brands like Yuxin, QiYi, Dayan, YJ, etc. you can buy speed cubes from. Most preferred speed cubes are those with the black body with color stickers on it.

Cube Timer

In addition to the speed cube, you need something to record time for every solution and watch the progress. There are a lot of speedcubing timers available in the market you can go for.

But if you are strict on budget, you can prefer some of the computer software or android apps which can help you with recording the time.

Cube Timer (Alternative)

Personally, I like the Twisty Timer app a lot, you will get in the play store. But if you are serious about it, then I prefer buying one actual timer.

At last you need discipline; you need to practice it on a regular basis. If you are not joining the institution, then you should strictly make a routine for this and follow it daily.

Practice makes a man perfect, who knows you can be the next record-breaker.

The Cross

Solving the cross within a blink of an eye requires a lot of practice. You need to be very perfect in looking ahead and predicting moves with the cube.

Every speedcuber is given 15 seconds’ inspection time to look at the scrambled cube. In these 15 seconds’ time, the speedcuber has to predict which all moves are required to complete the cross.

This prediction isn’t easy, you need to predict the shortest move required to complete the cross, which requires a lot of skill.

Try practicing making the cross holding the white face down so that in further steps you don’t require turning the whole cube. Turning the whole cube takes about half the second, which you cannot afford wasting while speedcubing.

The 2 Layers

In the beginner’s guide, you might have learned to complete the 1st layer and then moving towards the second layer. But in speedcubing, you have to complete the 2 layers in one go after the white cross.

For this, pairs of the white corners and the middle layer edge pieces are made and pushed to their respective locations.

In this step, you might require turning the whole cube once either y or y’ because turning the front face and the back face is a little bit difficult, but the white face remains at the bottom.

There are some cases for F2L along with their algorithms I have explained in another blog, please refer to it for a detailed explanation – “How to solve a Rubik’s cube under 30 seconds? Advanced guide”.

By the time, you practice F2L, you will definitely be sticking to the few cases which might seem easier and faster than others cases to you, and you will find the way to get that case and solve it quickly possible.

I personally like the case with corner white facing up and the edge piece on the top layer, it is easy for me to pair and push it to their location.

The PLL Skips

Now you might be wondering where is OLL part. The PLL skips are also the OLL algorithms, but its “one-look-last-layer”. There are some OLL cases that let you solve the cube in one go.

You don’t need to first make the yellow cross and then orient the corners and then permutate the pieces.

I would recommend learning the PLL skip algorithms instead of the OLL algorithms because performing the PLL skips in place of that respective OLL, there will be a strong chance that the cube will be solved instantly without heading towards the PLL part, and if by any chance the cube isn’t solved by now the yellow pieces will get oriented and now you just need to perform the PLL as you were supposed to do earlier.

So, there are a lot of algorithms you need to learn and practice for improving the speed. You don’t know how to practice? Don’t worry I’m there to help you out. I would recommend you to use the app Twisty Timer on android.

Features of Twisty Timer

  • This app gives you the scramble to solve.
  • It is easy to record time with this app because to stop the time you don’t have to touch the stop button like any other app, you can just touch anywhere on the screen to stop the timer. This is very convenient as you are in a hurry to stop the timer as soon as the cube is solved. It also increases accuracy.
  • It records every time you perform the solve and generates statistics with different metrics, with which you can see your progress.
  • There is an OLL and PLL training feature, which you can use to improve your PLL skips.
  • You can even find the OLL and PLL algorithms, but I would prefer noting down the PLL skip algorithm instead of OLL algorithms.

I’m not promoting this app, it’s just that I personally like this app so much that I recommend it to every cube lover. Click here to download.

Now let us get to the PLL skip cases with its algorithm.

I know that’s too much but it’s beneficial to learn. If you want to learn all the other algorithms then you can head to AlgDb.

FAQ

How to Practice efficiently and improve faster?

To improve faster and efficiently, select one new algorithm daily and practice that algorithm for the whole day. This is will get you better with all the algorithms with time.

What is the chance for an PLL skip case?

There is a 1/72 chance for a PLL skip case to occur. I know that’s not much.

Which part matters the most in Speedcubing?

F2L part takes the most time while solving, because F2L is done intuitively, and not with some fixed algorithms. Look-ahead is very important to master during F2L to get up to 10 seconds mark.

Which Cube should I buy?

Magnetic Cubes are most preferred for speedcubing. There are a lot of good cubes in budget price under Rs. 1000. For eg, Yuxin Little Magic 3×3, Qiyi Thunderclap v3 M, etc. You can buy it from CUBELELO in India.

Keep Practicing, if you’re very serious about it, don’t lose your dedication.

All the Best!!!
