Top 5 Best Movies Based on Video Games

No.5) Rampage [2018]

Rampage Movie Poster

The Rampage — movie based on a video game where a gorilla and a lizard destroy a city — was a good movie, Where three different animals become infected with a dangerous pathogen & destroy Chicago. Rampage isn’t as fun as its game, but with a strong Cast, it might satisfy audiences in the mood for a brainless blockbuster.

Rotten Tomatoes: 🍅 52% fresh

No.4) Assassin’s Creed [2016]

Assassins Creed Movie Poster

The Assassin’s Creed privilege has always been perfect for the big screen and debuts were Solid. Continues the same story of its video game, this story portrays  Callum Lynch (Michael Fassbender) exploring the memory of its ancestor Aguilar de Nerha (also Michael Fassbender) during the Spanish Inquisition and gains the skill of a master Assassin, before taking on the secret templar society.  Unfortunately, the CGI-fueled end result is still a joylessly overplotted slog. In some situations, it disappoints but if you are an Assassins Creed franchise fan then you must have to Give it a Watch.

IMDb Rating: 🌟5.7/10

Rotten Tomatoes: 🍅 18% fresh

No.3) Tomb Raider [2018]

No.2) Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time [2010]

Prince of Persia Movie Poster

Prince of Persia: The Sands Of Time was a fabulous video game, so when they came to know that there would be a movie based on the popular title, gamers were equal parts excited and afraid. With a great Cast like Jake Gyllenhaal as Dastan, Ben Kingsley as Prince Nizam of Persia, and Alfred Molina Sheik Amar, incredible visuals and a plot taken straight from the video game, seeing this is such a marvelous experience.

IMDb Rating: 🌟6.6/10

Rotten Tomatoes: 🍅 37% fresh.

5 Worst Movies Based on Video Games

No.5) Mortal Kombat [1991]

Mortal Kombat Movie Poster

We accept that Mortal Kombat is a popular movie, and all things questioned, it’s fun, but it is inadequately bad. The film Casts Johnny Cage (Linden Ashby), Sonya Blade (Bridgette Wilson), and Lui Kang (Robin Shou) were picked by Lord Rayden (Christopher Lambert) to fight Shang Tsung (Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa) and his warriors. Despite its popularity in video games, Mortal Kombat suffers from its poorly constructed plot, laughable dialogue, and subpar acting.

IMDb Rating: 🌟5.8/10

Rotten Tomatoes: 🍅 47% fresh.

No. 4) Hitman: Agent 47 [2015]

Hitman Movie Poster

Hitman: Agent 47 fails to clear the low bar set by its predecessor, abandoning thrilling action in support of a sleekly curved mélange of dull violence and product placement. Directed by Aleksander Bach — who is new to this, only worked on music videos and commercials — the plot focuses on 47 (Rupert Friend) as he tracks down Katia Litvinenko (Hannah Ware) in an attempt to find her father, a former geneticist who disappeared before the Agent Project was completed. The movie itself is full of drama, but no plot, the actors have almost no chemistry, and the action beats collapsed, leaving most fans of the Hitman franchise frustrated and bored.

IMDb Rating: 🌟5.7/10

Rotten Tomatoes: 🍅 9% fresh.

No.3) House of the Dead [2003]

House of the Dead Movie Poster

The Idea to bring a popular & best selling game title in a Movie could actually work but in the case of “House of the Dead” unfortunately, it didn’t work. A grungy, confused, mostly brainless mess of a film, House of the Dead is although loaded with unintentional laughs. Like most of the movies on this list, the game’s wisdom is thrown out the window, and its replaced with is dumb, and depending on how far poorly made movies can go for you, it’s unfun.

IMDb Rating: 🌟2.0/10

Rotten Tomatoes: 🍅 3% fresh

No.2) Double Dragon [1994]

Double Dragon Movie Poster

The Movie takes place in the fictional city of New Angeles, Billy Lee (Scott Wolf) and Jimmy (Mark Dacascos) are martial arts masters trained and grown by Satori (Julia Nickson) who is pursued by  Koga Shuko (Robert Patrick), an evil crime lord in search of a magical medallion. Double Dragon was one of the biggest game franchises of the late 1980s and early 1990s, So in 1994 it got its own movie. Unluckily for fans it didn’t live up to the hype. The acting is pitiless, and the plot is totally different, Smart use of special effects cannot mask the film’s overly simplistic storyline and cheesy dialogue.

IMDb Rating: 🌟3.8/10

Rotten Tomatoes: 🍅 13% fresh

No.1) Super Mario Bros. [1993]

Mario Bros. Movie Poster

Super Mario Bros, the film itself has almost nothing related to our childhood’s favorite video game. The villain is Koopa and isn’t a dragon turtle, the Koopas are weird reptile humans and Daisy is a paleontologist. The story is also poorly written. We know there wasn’t much to work with, but a dimension-jumping T-Rex looking to merge two worlds by capturing a paleontologist who has a meteorite that can do so seems like an extent.

Leaving what we know about the video game series, however, this movie is just poorly made. So much so, Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo as Mario and Luigi hated filming so much that the latter admitted they drank straight whiskey on set.

IMDb Rating: 🌟4.0/10

Rotten Tomatoes: 🍅 23% fresh

No.5)  Castlevania

Castlevania Movie Poster

Konami’s Horror-Platformer game Castlevania has a good Storyline about the vampires of the Dracula’s castle sounds like a perfect idea for a film. The rich lore and Gothic aesthetics would lend themselves nicely to a big-budget feature. At one point, a movie was in Writing that was announced back in 2007. Sadly, the writer’s strike of 2008-2009 put the film on Shelf, and it eventually had a stake driven through its heart. Turns out that sunlight, crucifixes, and garlic aren’t the only things that can hurt a vampire, and organized protests can be can as well.

No.4) call of Duty

call of duty game image

As the Success of its franchise, rumors of a Call of Duty Movie are coming out from past years. However, the film offered Hope, when the director of Sicario 2 was mentioned in an interview. But since past Months we haven’t listened anything about this series.

No.3) Halo

Halo Game Image

Halo fans are begging for this film, their beloved shooter for almost twenty years. It’s sad, therefore, that getting the movie off the ground. Microsoft’s desired level of control over the production rubbed many in Hollywood the wrong way. Case in point was they falling out with Peter Jackson, who planned to produce the movie with Neill Blomkamp in the director’s chair. However, it did give us District 9, so the Debate Ends.

No.2) Bio Shock

Bio Shock Game

Nonsensical  Game’s masterpiece is widely considered a classic of modern gaming. Fueled by an elaborate plot, biting commentary, and a dangerous world filled with monsters and mutated freaks, Bioshock is a cinephile’s dream come true. Despite this, Universal was reluctant to give the movie the budget it needed to be successful because the thought of spending more than $100 million on an R-rated film made their financial backers uncomfortable. While this belief doesn’t make a lick of sense, it was enough to sink the movie for good.

No.1) Gears of War

Gears of War Game Image

The Xbox 360’s first killer app, Gears of War took players to the grim and dying world of Sera, where a subterranean race of militant monsters called the Locus threaten the existence of humanity. Action, stylistic gore, and the beauty of urban decay would have looked amazing on the big screen, and the game’s sharp writing seemed tailor-made for a screenplay.

A film adaptation was first announced not even a year after the first game was released. But constant script rewrites and a rotating door of writers undermined the project and eventually caused it to crash and burn. We hope that the movie could one day be salvaged, but for now, fans shouldn’t hold their breath.

Conclusion

In Short, these movies are worth watching if you are a true gamer. Although, we have also included some movies which you can ignore, if you are a true gaming fan like me then you must give them a try.

Video-game movie adaptations have long been derided by critics for being too noisy, violent, or nonsensical, but in the past few decades, a select number of films have set themselves apart from the rest.

Must note that this list is based on the Ratings of the critics & it also includes personal preferences which can maybe differ from yours.
