12 Rules For Life Summary
Dr. Jordan B. Peterson says that humans have more in common with lobsters than you think. When lobsters fight for their territory, the one who is more confident keeps its tentacles high up and claws open. It shows that it will not back down from a challenge.
If you also keep you head up and your shoulders back you reflect confidence and dominance. It shows that you are ready to accept all the challenges and responsibilities. To learn more about confidence read the way of the superior man summary.
Take care of yourself
If you have a pet animal I am sure you keep excellent care of it, treat it with respect, play with it, always try to keep it healthy and treat it with love just like a family member. This rule says that you should take care of yourself like you take care of your pets, it’s like you are responsible to take care and help yourself.
Take yourself to walk, make yourself eat healthy food and feed your brain with more knowledge. Doing so will help you to respect yourself and stay healthy.
Make friends who want you to have a meaningful life
Making friends who want best for you is my personal best rule from the 12 rules for life.
Who among your friends would you doesn’t want to be friends with your brother or sister or child? These friends are the friends you should get rid of because you know these friends are just for time pass, they do nothing to improve their own life and make you indulge in activities you know are wrong.
Have courage to choose friends that might not be that fun to hang out with. And avoid and protect yourself against bad friends. This is one of the best rules for success in life.
Stop comparing yourself with others
If you have a habit comparing yourself try comparing with your own self. There will always be someone richer, healthier and better than you. Comparing yourself to other is self-destructive it will lead to anger, resentment and self-loathing.
Make improvements every day no matter how small, even less than 1% change will lead a much better human being after 2 months and so. If you want to learn a skill, improve every day until you are an expert. This is another great rule for success in life.
Don’t make yourself dislike your children
You children might turn out to be a human you might not like, but is the fault 10% theirs? No when they were small you let them do acts you knew you don’t like or else you might have not let them do things they wanted to in their life so now they turned out like this.
If you don’t like something in them chances are the society will also not like it and this might make you child lonely and isolated from this society. What you should do is reduce the number of rules you make them follow and at least don’t impose these rule on them forcefully.
Before criticizing others criticism yourself
If suddenly there was a natural disaster you start to blame God for it but were you prepared or took enough precautions against it? Before you criticize anyone else, analyse yourself first, are you even in a position to criticize them, or are you perfect? Probably not after all no one is perfect so instead of criticizing each other we all should make ourselves better.
If every person on this planet is focus on improving oneself instead of criticizing, the world will be a much better place.
Have a meaningful purpose, it will lead to a meaningful life
The journey of who you are to who you want to be can be completed with the vehicle called purpose. You have potential and values learn how to use them to make this world a better place. Life maybe hard or unfair it doesn’t matter because life is not supposed to be fair or easy it should be meaningful. Your suffering and sacrifice should be worth doing something meaningful.
If you are not aware of your purpose, discover it. A man is weak without his purpose. Your purpose is your truth and you are fulfilled when you have a purpose. A man’s work and intimacy is just an opportunity to give his gifts.
Tell the truth
Your habit of speaking truth or lie decides your trustworthiness in the society. If you are always telling the truth or maybe at least you don’t lie you will be more trustworthy in the society. When you are stuck in a situation where you don’t know what to say, say the truth. When you lie you have to tell more lie to show your lie as a truth.
One of the worst things you can do is tell lie to yourself, if you are afraid of something, tell the truth and accept it then challenge it to overcome this fear.
Learn to listen
This is one of the most important rule from the 12 rules for life. You might have heard some tell you that you are boring, or you don’t care to listen to me. It is because they are right you don’t have listening skills. When you don’t listen people stop telling you about themselves or how their day was or any other they story they wanted to share. If you “listen” exact opposite happens, people tell you all their stories and they don’t consider you boring.
If you want to be a listener, assume that the person speaking to might tell you something you don’t know. And mirroring and labeling are also techniques that help you listen to people and gain their trust.
Make a precise speech
When you speak, speak with an aim. Don’t build unnecessary stories around it, say exactly what you meant and tell them what you want. Too much information can cause chaos in that situation. Letting them know what you want and what is it that you are looking for instead of making stories will give you more chances of getting what you want. So when you speak be precise.
Let children face challenges
There are many instances where your children faced a challenge and they were unprepared for it, so what you did was took the challenge yourself and resolved the issue for your child. That’s where you were wrong, I know a child cannot face many things until he/she has reached an age or are ready for it.
The author says that let your child face the challenge that they are supposed to face it will only help them grow in life. They will learn their limit, shortcoming and fears. Let them do the difficult tasks. Your child should be risk taker. Let them face these challenges and fears and they will overcome them.
Appreciate the beautiful world
The last rule of 12 rules for life is appreciate the beautiful world. Here the author tries to tell, with this phrase, that you are so busy working all day every day that you should take time off from working from time to time. You should forget all the worries and live in the moment from time to time. For some time don’t talk about the negatives in your life.
Your all attention should be on the positive. Appreciate and spread the positive to live a positive life.
By appreciating all the animals around us like cats or dogs, appreciate water, air, fire etc. that make this world a beautiful place, by doing so you will feel good, happy and relaxed from your everyday working. This kind of break is necessary. This is one of the best rules for a happy life.
