Shaniwarwada : the landmark place in Pune

Shaniwarwada is the landmark place in Pune. It is a symbol of the glory of the Peshwa empire. Initially Peshwa Bajirao was conducting his administration from Saswad. after sometime he felt the need of some place which must be good to conduct administrative work.

In 1732 you found a place near Lal Mahal which is good for conducting administrative work and he decided to construct a Palace over there. Delegate the responsibility of supervision of construction of Shaniwar Wada to his younger brother Chimajiappa.

After construction of Shaniwar Wada Bajirao Peshwa shifted to Shaniwar Wada with his family and conducted all his administrative work from there. Afterwards shaniwarwada became a capital of Peshwa Empire.

Location of this place in Pune

ShaniwarWada is located at the centre of Pune city exactly opposite to the Lal Mahal Shaniwar Wada is located near the bank of river Mula Mutha.


Visit to the Shaniwar Wada will be mesmerizing and get you to the history of Peshwa. Big entrance of building welcome you to shanivarwada the campus of Shaniwar Wada you will find a big door in front of you that will be a cinematic view. You will enter the shaniwarwada through the Dindi Darwaja of Delhi darwaja .

This Darwaja is called as Delhi Darwajaa because of it face towards Delhi City of India. Since the historical period every small kingdom aspired to win Delhi. By keeping this thing in mind Peshwa decided to build the entrance which will face towards Delhi which was the symbol of peshwas aspiration to win Delhi.

In shaniwarwada you will find four main darwaja Viz. Delhi darwaja from where you will enter to the shaniwarwada , Khidki darwaja which is the smallest darwaja of , Narayan darwaja and Mastani Darwaza is quite outside the main campus of the building

Other structures you can find inside the shaniwarwada are as below :

Nagar khana which is just above the Delhi darwaja ,goshala, Hazarika karanja, drainage system, water supply system, foundation of underground rooms, foundation of other rooms of Shaniwarwada, Ganpati Mahal, Ganpati mandir, Tata of the wada ( Tata is wall compound)

Shaniwarwada was destroyed by unknown fire in 1830. Still this remains of foundation helps you imagine the seven store building of Shaniwarwada and you can feel the glory of the Peshwa Empire.

Lal Mahal: The origine of Pune

This is the place in Pune from where history started.

shahaji Raje Bhosle built Lal mahal for his family. Shivaji Maharaj shifted to Pune with his mother Jijamata for rebuilding of the city. Initially people considered Pune area was as a cursed area. Shivaji Maharaj with jijamata came and started living there to build trust in people to start living there again.

  Shahaji raje constructed Lal Mahal in 1640 . Shivaji Raje spent most of his childhood in Lal Mahal. Shivaji Maharaj and Saibai got married in Lal mahal only.

Lal Mahal is witness to most of the historical moments. It is one of the important buildings as per the history of Maratha Samrajya. Initially Shivaji Maharaj conducted his administrative work from Lal Mahal. After some time he won the Torna and shifted his administrate office there.

Lal Mahal got destroyed by many attacks by the other rulers. Because of this the exact area of Lal Mahal and exact structure of the building is not known. In 1988 Pune Municipal Corporation built an image of Lal Mahal which we can see now.

Current status of this place in Pune

Lal Mahal is now under constructionfor renewation. PMC kept it close for tourist. Once it is open you can see structure of Raigad Fort as well as Shiv Samrajya on first floor.You can see some Statues Of Shivaji Maharaj, Jijamata and Shivaji Maharaj’s teacher Dadoji Konddev . There is one small park inside Lal Mahal which is known as Jijamata Udyan.

Aga khan Palace: Place in Pune with history and beauty

FMohammad Shah third built Aga Khan Palace in 1892. During this period there was a drought in the Pune city. To create employment for the locals of Pune and nearby area Aga Khan decided to build this palace as he had never visited or left in this palace and lived in this palace.

It is landmark in the history as British government confined Gandhiji, his wife Kasturba Gandhi and his secretary Mahadevji Desai in this palace. Gandhiji stayed in this palace from 9th August 1962 21944 during the Quit India Movement.

By considering Aga Khan Palace’s importance in the history of India Aga Khan IV donated this palace the Government of India now from 1980 Gandhi Memorial society is looking after the palace.

This place in Pune has different importance in History.

What you can see there

During the visit to Aga Khan Palace you can see the beautiful garden as well as the beautiful building. The whole Palace is beautifully coloured and surrounded by a beautifully maintained Garden.

In Aga Khan Palace you can see the room of Gandhiji and Kasturba Gandhi. Utensils  used by them during their stay over there are kept there. There is one statue of Gandhiji in one room of the Pal.

The first floor of the palace is donated for the  museum as Gandhiji stayed at the first four of the Palace. Tourists can’t visit upper floors.

you can see the hamam khana of king AgaKhan. Kasturba Gandhi and Mahadevbhai Desai spent their last days in Aga Khan Palace. You can see there Samadhis during the visit.

Aga Khan Palace is one of the beautiful places in Pune city and the view of this palace is cinematic. The Oscar winning movie Gandhi is short in this area.

kesariwada(place in Pune )

Kesariwada  is home of Lokmanya Tilak. Now there is museum on this place.

Things used by Lokmanya Tilak and some photographs and other related things are conserved in this museum.

As you enter Kesari Wada you will find a Ganpati temple of Lokmanya Tilak. Museum is on first floor of the building

Kesariwada gives you a glimpse of Indian National Movement.

Rajiv Gandhi national park

In 1953 Pune Municipal Corporation constructed a zoo and name of this zoo is Peshwa Udyan. area of this park was 60 acre . but later it was found that this was not enough to occupy animals.

In 1996 PMC constructed a bigger zoo. area of this This new zoo is130 acre. Located near Katraj area of Pune. In 2014 this was named as Rajiv Gandhi National Park.

This zoo has many animals like lions, tigers, bears, Bison ,deer and many more. There is one snake park inside the National Park.

There is a good sitting arrangement for tourists at various places. The zoo is beautified by various plants. one could visit the zoo by electric vehicle which is available inside the national Park.

This will be a nice experience to visit Rajiv Gandhi National Park. You can feel wildlife closely here.

Friends garden

Name of Friends Garden is P.L.Deshpande Udyan . Mostly youngsters of Pune city visit this place .

It is Japanese style garden and constructed in large area. Most of the people come here to see a beautiful nature and plantation. There are various types of plants in the garden.

Starting area of Garden is dedicated for kids playing instruments and other areas of the garden have small Ponds like structures and beautiful plants.

Many Bollywood movies are shot in this garden.

You will enjoy cinematic view of this garden.

Pataleshwar temple

Pataleshwar temple

Pataleshwar temple is situated in Pune Shivajinagar area at Jangli Maharaj Road.

This cave temple is a rock cut cave temple. This is carved out in the 8th century. It was originally located outside Pune but beacause of the city limits have expanded so that now it is at jangali Maharaj Road.

This is Lord Pataleshwar’s Temple. He is the Lord of below.

The temple is incomplete because of a fault line found at the back of the sanctum. That fault line made further sculpting  unsafe. Despite being incomplete, the temple still holds tremendous religious significance.

The temple is peaceful and serene and the work of the temple is incomplete.

Mr. Dinkar Kelkar started forming a museum in 1922 in his home .

Dinkar Kelkar was a shopkeeper. He used to sell spectacle. He was fond of collecting antique things .His collection was large enough to form a museum .

Museum is a three story building . It will take around minimum 2 hours to visit all floors.

Initially this museum had 50000 things. Now only  2.5 thousand things are available for visitors.

This is worth seeing and you should visit the place in Pune during your visit.

Dagdusheth Halwai Ganesh temple: The holy place in Pune

Dagdusheth Ganpati is a famous Ganpati temple in the Pune city which is located in the Budhwar Peth area of Pune .

Ganpati temple is near Shaniwar Wada, Lal Mahal and Lakshmi Road.

 This Ganpati statue is made up of Gold. This is one of the richest Ganpati temples in Pune.

Shrimant Dagdusheth was a shopkeeper who used to sell sweets. He constructed the Ganpati temple. Name of the Ganpti is on the name of Srimant the Dagadusheth Halwai.
