If any person goes to Mumbai he will definitely want to see the beauty of the Gateway of India. So in this paragraph, I’m going to discuss the construction of the Gateway of India, but do you know? When and how the Gateway of India was made?

I think many of you wouldn’t know about this but before the independence of India, its construction was started for the first time in 1911.

King George V and Queen Mary were to visit Mumbai so the construction was started but when they came the construction was not completed so the cardboard model was shown to the king. And after that 2 years, after the governor of Mumbai Sir George Sydenham Clarke laid the foundation of the Gateway of India on 31 March 1913.

Before the construction of the Gateway of India, this place was used by the fisherman to hunt fish, but when the permission was granted to build the Gateway of India then the place was taken by the Fishermans. In 1920 the construction was started of the monument whose foundation was laid in 1913. The construction was going on for the 4 years in 1924.

Rufus Isaacs opened the Gateway of India for the public On 4 December 1924. From 1924 to now the Gateway of India is an attractive place for the tourist and the public.

After the construction of the monument, this is the main entry doorway from were many big celebrities came to India and in 1947 after the independence, the Britishers left India through the Gateway of India.

Now let us know about the Architect, George Wittet was the Architect who made the Gateway of India.

The Gateway of India is made up of concrete and stones, for example, yellow basalt and reinforced concrete and some stone from nearby Mumbai. When the Gateway of India was ready in 1924 the height of the monument was 26 m (85 ft) with a diameter of 15m (49 ft). There are several halls all the side of the arches in which 600 peoples can enter.

The cost of construction of the monument was very high which was 26 lakhs which was very costly in those times. The Indian government paid the amount of the construction. The Gateway of India is one of the most important monuments of India of these times. And that’s why the Gateway of India is also known as the Taj Mahal of India.

The best time can be the night time from 07:00 PM and 09:30 PM to visit, in the night time the lights make the monument more beautiful and the street food vendors are all around.

Elephanta Caves

Elephanta Caves is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Mumbai near the Gateway of India, that’s why the tourists who came here to visit Gateway of India also visit the Elephanta Caves.

The caves are situated in the Elephanta or Gharapuri island. Elephanta Caves can be reached very easily with the motorboats, the motorboats are only Rs 130-150 according to the ride type. In the entrance of the Elephanta Caves, you can see the statues of India’s two great people Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Swami Vivekananda.

There are five caves which are dedicated to the Hindus lord Shiva and others to the Buddhist architectures. The Elephanta Caves covers a land of 60,000 square feet. People say that the Elephanta Caves was made by the Pandavas, some also said that the demon devotee of Lord Shiva Banasura. Some local peoples also say that the Elephanta Caves was not made by the hands of a human.

During the winters from November to February are the best time to visit Elephanta Caves. Monsoon season is worst for here, the morning time can be the best time to visit here.
