Types of a Website and Launch History of Popular Websites

There are over 1.5 billion websites on the internet today and more than 50,000 websites are created every day. The evolution of the internet and website began in 1990 when Sir Tim Berners Lee created the World Wide Web at CERN laboratory.

The launch of the first live website and the first web browser became possible due to the technologies developed by him.

He developed them in order to introduce a new information revolution and the whole world adopted it as a means of communication.

Moreover, it transformed the look, features, performance, and security of websites. Every large, medium and even small enterprise owns a website in order to build their brand and online identity.

Types of a Website

The web technologies were not so advance at the beginning and the internet connection speeds were also not so fast. Therefore, the structures of webpages were very basic.

Today there are many types of websites such as blogs, corporate, community forum, e-commerce, educational, news, portfolio, social media, web portal, etc. But according to their features, the category is narrow.

In the context of design and development, they have major types-

  • Static
  • Dynamic
  • Responsive

Static Website

Static websites are those websites that are steady as well as stable. It means whenever somebody wants to access that website, the content of every webpage will be similar for all the users. However, we can visit a static website but cannot edit or modify any of the components.

Generally, Static websites contain HTML, CSS, and JavaScript language. Only admin can change, modify, as well as update the data of a static website. Generally, static websites are informational or brochure websites that have a limited number of webpages.

Example- Blogs, Hexo, Octopress, etc.

Dynamic Website

Dynamic websites are those whose content keeps changing in real-time. So, every user has different content available on their screen.

They also contain HTML, CSS, Javascript but they also contain server-side languages such as PHP, MySQL, etc.

New webpages keep creating when a user performs their activities and a dynamic website has no fix size website.

Dynamic websites are complex in terms of coding and also expensive as compared to static websites. They require a dedicated server to handle the traffic from all the regions.

Example- Amazon, Facebook, Youtube, etc.

Responsive Website

Responsive websites are adaptive in nature. They consist of flexible grids that can adjust their content according to the screen resolution of the device they are displayed on (whether mobile, tablet, or desktop).

Static and Dynamic both websites can have a responsive nature and provide a better user experience.

Responsive designs are the choice of every web developer to make it ready for the mobile-first strategy because nowadays, many people use internet more on their phone as compared to desktop.

Example- Github, Shopify, Wikipedia, etc.

Web Designing vs Web Development

There are so many online tools available today to create your online identity without being a tech geek.

But the building process of a smooth and bug-free website requires knowledge of computer languages and web technologies.

For a normal user, publishing a website needs to write some pieces of code and also upload it on a server. But they don’t know that the role of each coder is not the same.

There are two separate profiles of programmers i.e. a Web Designer and a Web Developer and there are two types of web development i.e. Front-End Development and Back-End Development.

Front-End Development

The process of building a site in which the programmer writes his whole code in order to design the physical appearance of the website is Front-End Development. The programmer is a Front-End Developer or a Web Designer.

In this process, the programmer uses three basic languages HTML, CSS, Javascript, and also some frameworks to enhance the look of a website. A web designer takes care of the color scheme, navigation panel, fonts, images, shapes of buttons, etc. in order to create a better user interface.

Back-End Development

The process in which the programmer provides functionality to a website is Back-End Development. Users cannot see those codes but it is essential for its operations. The programmer is a Back-End Developer or a Web Developer. In this process, the programmer uses server-side languages such as PHP, .NET, Python.

As compared to a web designer, the task of a web developer is tough and he is always concerned about factors like website security, webpage loading time, content management, database, etc.

Full Stack Developer

If you know few people belonging to a programming background, then you have always seen a comparison between a front-end developer and a back-end developer. People always keep comparing their skills.

But the fact is that both of them have proficiency in their field and both of them play an important role in developing a quality website.

The developers who are sharp in both the skills i.e. front-end and-back end are Full-Stack Developers.
