WHO WAS WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE?

William Shakespeare is regarded as the greatest writer of the century. He has written many plays, tragedies, comedies, and sonnets(poem of 14 lines) .

He had written nearly 154 sonnets in his personal diary which were published later after his death. It is said that after the Bible it is his works that are read the most.

LIFE STORY OF WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE

Actually there are no official birth records available of when was William Shakespeare was born but according to a church record he was baptized in Stratford, England on 26 April 1564. It was a period of 16th century so he is termed as a Renaissance poet.

His father’s name was John Shakespeare and he was a businessman, he used to sell gloves. His mother’s name was Mary Arden. William was the third child, he had two elder sisters and three younger brothers.

Official records of his education are also not available but people believe that he received his early education in King’s new school of Stratford where he learned reading and writing but he did not attend any university.

William Shakespeare of age 18 married Annie Hathaway of age 26 on 28th November 1582 in Worcester. They gave birth to two daughters and one son. Their son’s name was Hamlet who died at the age of eleven. One of their daughter’s name was Susan who was very close to William.

WORKING YEARS

Till now William was not famous and from 1585 to 1592 are termed as lost years because no one knows what happened to Shakespeare during this period. But it is generally believed that he came to London during this time and he did struggle there is a theatre drama company and he used to write plays for the drama company. It is said that people were heavily liking those plays but high ranked people did not admire them.

By 1597 William Shakespeare had written 37 plays out of which 15 were published, Shakespeare started earning a lot of money by these plays and he started his own theatre near Thames river called Globe theatre. He used to spend most of his time in the city for writing and acting the plays.

In 1603 after the death of Queen Elizabeth, King James I became ruler so William Shakespeare changed the name of his theatre to king’s men company.

After this, he wrote many plays, tragedies, and comedies by which he earned a lot and in 1605 he started investing in real estate as an entrepreneur. By 1610 he took retirement from writing as he used to write only to earn money which he got. Consequently after his death in 1616, he named all his wealth to his daughter’s name Susan.

WORKS OF WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE

Specialty of William Shakespeare was writing and from 1590 to 1613 he wrote a total of 37 plays of themes of history, tragedies, comedies, and tragicomedies.

Romeo and Juliet

Romeo and Juliet play a story of two families is still read today in which Juliet fooled Romeo, Romeo thought Juliet was dead due to which Romeo killed himself and when Juliet get to know this then she killed her in real.

Shakespeare’s first plays were mostly based on history, he wrote about Henry VI ( part I, part II and part III) and henry V to show their weak and corrupt rule.

Julius Caesar

Julius Caesar was one of his greatest tragic plays. He was a Roman emperor. There was the democratic rule in Rome but Julius took all powers to his control and Brutus murdered his best friend. Brutus killed him for the freedom of people of Rome and bringing back democracy but Cassius and Antony wanted it for their own greed.

Hamlet

It was also a great tragic play. Hamlet was the protagonist of this play, his father was dead, and in dreams of hamlet, he used to come and tell that he was killed by hamlet’s uncle. Hamlet’s mother married his uncle after the death of his husband to find it Hamlet performed a drama play in which he invited his mother and uncle.

He repeated all the things in play and when hamlet was going to perform killing of his reel uncle, his real uncle left the drama set due to which hamlet got sure that he was really the killer. But then he captured and held his prisoner. He started acting like a mad person and he got himself killed. Bollywood movie Haider is based on the same play.

Another tragic play was Othello in which two persons loving each other killed each other due to differences seeded by the third person. Bollywood movie Omkara is based on this play.

Macbeth

It is also another great play that tells us about how much people are hungry and mad for power. Macbeth was the soldier of the king of Scotland and one day he was told by witches that someday he will become a king. From that day he started only thinking about how to become king as soon as possible.

Lady Macbeth, his wife started influencing him to kill the king and take the power. One day when the king came to the house of Macbeth, he was killed and Macbeth became king. The day Macbeth was told that he will become king, his friend Banco was also there and he was told that one day his son will become king. So Macbeth tried to kill banco and his son. Banco was killed but his son flew away. Later Macduff killed Macbeth.

William Shakespeare’s style of writing was very innovative, emotional, and creative. he used metaphors and rhetorical phrases in his plays. The reader never felt bored at any point in his play due to which they were much successful.

William Shakespeare also used to write sonnets for his personal interest in his personal diary. But he never published them while living.

DEATH OF WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE

He died at the age of 52. Confirmed date and reason for death are unknown but mostly it is believed that he died of illness.

Some people believe that he died on 23rd April 1616 but church records show that he was cremated at trinity church on 25th April 1616.

CONCLUSION

William Shakespeare was a great personality and a great writer, he had written outstanding plays, and based on them still lots of movies are made. Although he started writing only for making a living but he ended up in become lavishly rich.

He lived a life of 52 years, you may find it short but it was long enough as medical facilities at that time were not good and there were loads of diseases.
