HISTORY
Early History
When cricket was emerging in England and Australia, then India was busy for their independence. So in the starting phase of cricket, there was no cricket in India. But after 1900 it seems some domestic matches were played in India.
Then came the phase where India got its international test playing status. So the phase between 1932 to 1980s that means almost 50 years of getting international test status was very crucial. That phase was the struggle phase for the Indian team. They lose a lot of test matches they fought back and they lose.
So doing these things India got some outstanding players till the year 1975. 24th March 1952 is the memorable date for the Indian team because India was registered its first test win against England in Madras ( Today’s Chennai). Later in 1952 India won their first test series against Pakistan.
In 1967-1968 India manage to win its first series outside the subcontinent, against New-Zealand.
History after 1970
BEFORE ONE DAY INTERNATIONAL MATCHES:-
In 1970s India got some brilliant players. The bowling department handled by the Indian spin quartet – Bishen Bedi, E.A.S Prasanna, BS Chandrasekhar and Srinivas Venkataraghavan. This period saw the emergence of India’s two finest batsman Sunil Gavaskar and Gundappa Viswanath.
Like all, you know Indian pitches are quite spin friendly so spin quartet is enough to destroy the opposition’s batting line up. Due to their tremendous performance, the Indian team would manage to win back to back series in 1971 against West Indies and England under the captaincy of Ajit Wadekar. In that West Indies series, Gavaskar scored 774 runs. His contribution is pretty much responsible for that series victory.
AFTER ONE DAY INTERNATIONAL MATCHES:-
This is the period where One day International was going to be introduced and that was the beginning of the cricket world cup era.
During 1975s India found one of its all-time best all-rounder Mr Kapil Dev.
At the beginning of ODI cricket, Gavaskar was India’s captain and he was considered as the best batsman for team India.
He was famous for his defencing approach. So at that time, India has considered a weaker team in ODIs. For example in the first edition of cricket world cup i.e. in 1975, Gavaskar scored 36 not out of 174 balls against England. And Indian manage to score just 132 for 3 and lost by massive 202 runs.
During the period of 1979-1980, India put some effort into making attacking-minded batting line up. And Indian cricket board found some furious stroke makers like Mohammed Azharuddin, Dilip Vengsarkar and two fine all-rounder Kapil Dev and Ravi Shastri.
For their effort, India manages to an unexpected win in 1983 world cup tournament. They defeat two-time world champion the great west indies team in the final at Lords. All credit goes to the best bowling performance in that final match.
By seeing this victory lots of Indian’s big guns put bat and ball in their hand.
THE GOD’S ERA ( SACHIN TENDULKAR ERA)
When Kapil Dev was lifting the 1983 Prudential Cup, a boy got inspiration somewhere in the Mumbai. That 10-year-old led would go on to not only be India’s best player, but also the GOD of Cricket globally. This was Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar.
Sachin made his Ranji Trophy debut in December 1988. He scored a century not out in his very first match. Sachin has scored centuries in all three domestic tournament debut – that is Ranji, Irani and Dullip trophies.
Sachin made his first ODI and Test debut against Pakisthan in 1989. He became the youngest player in debut in international format.
Tendulkar’s record is countless. He is the first player who scored a double century in an ODI format. Sachin is the only player who made 100 international centuries. He was the man of the tournament in 2003 world cup and the highest scorer in 1996 tournament. But he never found such success as a captain. However, he is the worlds best batsman that world cricket has ever produced.
SHORT INTRODUCTION OF INDIAN TEAM’S SUCCESS
India tasted its first Test victory in 1952. That is almost 20 years. At that time India was counted one of the weaker sides, this is because till 50 years ( I mean till 1982 ) India played 196 test matches and won only 35 i.e. won 35 matches out of 196 matches. However, India got some of the finest players till 1970 like Kapil dev, Viswanath, Sunil Gavaskar and spin quartet etc.. But they still could not manage to maintain their winning track till 1982.
But after 21st century India did well in both home and overseas condition. India also won twice the world’s biggest cricket tournament i.e. cricket world cup. India won 1983’s Prudential world cup under the captaincy of the great Kapil dev and 2011’s ICC cricket world cup under the legacy of Captain coll Mr Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
These two world cups are the biggest achievement for the Indian cricket team until today’s date.
India also won ICC champion’s trophy twice that is in 2002(Under Ganguly’s captaincy) and 2013 ( Under Dhoni’s Captaincy). And won a T20 world cup in the year 2007 under the captaincy of Mahendra Singh Dhoni. So for these reasons MS Dhoni is known as the most successful captain for Indian Cricket Team.
