Bhartiya Janta Party
Bhartiya Janta Party is said to be right leaning and the current party in power. It is one the two dominant Indian political parties.
In fact, it is the party with the largest membership in the whole world.
They have deep ties with the RSS [Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh] and hence is at the frontier of the Hindutva movement.
Even the current prime minister Narendra Modi was a member of the RSS. It was formed by Atal Bihari Vajpayee and LK Advani when the Janta Party banned a dual membership. But its ideological predecessor was Bhartiya Jana Sangh.
Their official policy is of Integral humanism. An ideology by pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay.
Their main political promises include, building of Ram Janmabhoomi temple, Abrogation of Article 370 [One nation one constitution] and uniform civil code.
As a result of the leadership of prime minister Modi they were successful to complete first two.
BJP got a major break in 1998, when they were elected to the center for the first time. Upon his election as Prime Minister in 2014, Modi has largely continued the reformist approach of the last two NDA governments.
But unlike Vajpayee, prefers to call himself as a messiah of the poor, and not as an economic liberalizer.
The current government is quite austere and outspoken about its counter terrorism and defense policy. For example, the current NDA government has led two surgical strikes in the Pakistan occupied Kashmir.
Current home minister, Amit Shah is a modern day Chanakya because of his success in various elections and the way he handled Article 370.
Every Indian political party has a dark sid.BJP accused of polarizing the Hindus. In fact, Senior BJP leaders are accused of corruption like in the Hawala case.
Indian National Congress
INC was Founded in 1885 so it is the oldest active political party in India.
It had utmost influence in the freedom struggle. For example even Mahatma Gandhi was an INC leader.
Slowly there was a leadership change in the congress because of the Kamraj plan[It suggested that major leaders of the congress should resign from their post and work for the party].
But Political analysts believe that Nehru used opportunity to deepen his daughter Indira’s position deep into the party. The congress eventually split into two parties Congress(o) led by leaders like Morarji desai and Kamraj, Congress(R) which was led by Indira Gandhi and her MPs.
Congress has always been a center or center left party.
Both Nehru and Indira had socialist policies. Indira Gandhi was succeeded by her son Rajiv Gandhi.
Rajiv Gandhi Era
Rajiv is one the most loved prime minister of our country.
He was considered to be a honest man. However his honest figure was tarnished after the Bofors scandal [He was cleared of all the allegations posthumously]. His stance against LTTE cost his life.
The next person to become the prime minister under congress was PV Narsimha Rao. His LPG reforms saved the Indian economy because India was on the brink of bankruptcy.
UPA with support of left leaning parties came to power from 2004 to 2014. India observed a growth rate of 10.5% under Manmohan Singh. However, his critics often argued that the real power was in the hands of Sonia Gandhi [wife of Rajiv Gandhi].
UPA eventually lost power because of a series of scams [2g, national herald, Augusta Westland etc].
After the 2019 defeat to BJP Rahul Gandhi then president of congress resigned and currently Sonia Gandhi is the interim president of the INC.
The BJP has always accused the INC of pseudo secularism. They argue that congress has always favoured the minorities especially the muslims [This grew after the shah bano case]. All the right leaning leaders of the congress were the most powerful, also known as the Syndicate.
INC is often criticized for nepotism because a Gandhi family member eventually becomes the Congress head. The presidential candidate for the 2019 election was Rahul Gandhi.
He is the grand son of Indira Gandhi and son of Rajiv Gandhi. Congress is one of the largest Indian political parties, hence they are attacked frequently.
Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, is one the left leaning Indian political parties was found by C Annadurai because he felt that Periyar was slowly sidelining him from the Dravida Kazhagam to favour his wife.
After that, the followers of Periyar formed DMK in 1949. DMK has been in power in Tamil Nadu for a long time.
C Annadurai was the first non-congress chief minister of Tamil Nadu. C Annadurai continued the anti-Hindi imposition. On 13 October 1957 they observed the “anti-Hindi Day”.
Annadurai was the first politician to use the concept of rice subsidy to win elections. Above all, even today Tamilian politicians use this tactic.
Dravidian politicians in 1950 protested and demanded an independent state called Dravida Nadu. C Annadurai died on 10 September 1968. He holds the Guinness world record for the greatest number of people to attend his funeral because 15 million people attended his funeral.
His political successor was M Karunanidhi. He became the chief minister of Tamil Nadu of 5 non consecutive times. Karunanidhi is one of the few politicians who have never lost an election.
Hindus accuse DMK of being anti-Hindu. For instance, Karunanidhi received a large about of criticism for planning to cut the Ram Setu, which the Hindus consider sacred for his infrastructural development.
In the 2g scam senior Dmk leader, A Raja is the prima facie accused. Even Karunanidhi’s daughter Kanimozhi was accused hence damaging DMKs image.
Aam Aadmi Party
The Aam Aadmi Party is a political party that was founded by Arvind Kejriwal a formal IRS officer[Also an IITian ].
He was one of the disciples of India Against Corruption movement started by Anna Hazare. Therefore he had an anti corruption fame among the masses.
People considered AAP because they rose as an option, except INC and BJP.
They first came to power in 2014 when they won 28 seats and with the support of congress formed the government. But soon he resigned owing to the disputes with the central government.
In 2015 he rose like a phoenix when the AAP won 67 of the 70 seats in the Delhi legislative house.
People who stay in Delhi thank Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia for their Educational reforms. In addition they started the door step service in which you could pay extra 50 rupees to enjoy any government service at the comfort of your home. AAP is socialist in nature.
Arvind Kejriwal came under fire when he accused senior leaders of varies parties of being corrupt and hence had to dace several defamation cases [ However, he apologized and the cases were withdrawn by the various politicians ].
Another controversy the AAP government had to face was when they decided to make public transport free for woman just before the Delhi election.
Bal Keshav Thackeray [Also known as Balasaheb Thackeray] founded Shiv Sena on 19th June 1966. He was a famous cartoonist, known for his satires. Therefore he was liked by the Marathas
It is an Indian political party whose foundation was the sayukt Maharashtra movement.
They are said to be far right wing party, however in 2020 they are said to become more centered after coalition with NCP and INC.
They fought for the right of Marathas and Hindutva. Bal Thackeray is the icon of Hindutva in Maharashtra .
Balasaheb is considered a very charismatic leader because of his outspoken speeches.
Rise To Power
They rose to power in 1995 with the BJP. Balasaheb proudly claimed that the workers of Shiv Sena, participated in the demolition of the babri masjid. He had to appear in court several times especially because of the Mumbai riots.
Nonetheless he has selflessly worked for the Marathi Manoos. It was believed that Raj Thackeray his nephew would take over Shiv Sena, but due to political differences Raj left Shiv Sena to form MNS.
After Balasaheb passed away, the reins of the party came into the hands of his son Uddhav Thackeray. In addition to being the sena chief, Uddhav is the current CM of Maharashtra.
However, they broke the 35-year-old [formed by Bal Thackeray himself] alliance with BJP [NDA] to form government with congress and NCP.
This angered a lot of orthodox Shiv Sena supporters because this was a fracture in the Hindutva movement. The Thackeray’s family plays this peculiar politics were the family member does not play an active role in politics.
But this all changed when Aditya Thackeray became the first Thackeray to contest and win the Maharashtra election. Uddhav Thackeray is the current chief minister of Maharashtra. This is another example of a Thackeray joining active politics.
Shiv Sena has often been criticized for its hate speech and its violence against south Indians, Guajarati’s and North Indians.
In conclusion, India has seen a Plethora of politicians with different political Ideas. But these Ideas are useless if they do not take the form of an organization like a political party.
Indian Political parties helps Indians with similar ideologies to come together to form so that they can serve the nation. Yet this happens with a pinch of dirty politics
